AI Bias and Me

AI stands at the brink of ushering in a new era of change—one that demands careful, forward-thinking governance and ethical, inclusive AI policies for the social good.

As we face the intersection of technological disruption and governance, I am driven by the question: how can we proactively manage societal shifts before they become crises?

I am committed to anticipating and addressing racial, ethical, and political biases in AI and their societal impact.

Research

Focuses on social, legal, and political issues of AI models like ChatGPT and Google Bard, trained on historically biased data, often amplifying biases and stereotypes.

I have researched and published two papers on AI bias. My papers, "Reducing Racial and Ethnic Bias in AI Models" and "Political Bias in AI-Language Models: A Comparative Analysis of ChatGPT-4, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Claude," examine the impact of AI-driven bias and misinformation on society and political discourse, while exploring the policy frameworks and governance needed to mitigate them.

Community Outreach

Cyber Smart Teens

This initiative takes a youth-centric approach. It offers critical insights into the responsible use of social media and the honest dimensions of AI and how to critically evaluate information, particularly in the context of AI's increasing presence in our online interactions.

We seek to foster engagement and reflection through the exchange of our collective experiences and insights. The online & in-person workshops focus on how NOT to spend endless hours scrolling, how to recognize deep fakes, and how to recognize bias and misinformation, among other traps and pitfalls of the digital world in an interactive platform.

Propaganda, Past and Present

Studied Propaganda, which has been a factor in politics since antiquity, but in an age when social media has made disseminating ideas easier than ever and the terms fake news and alternative facts have entered the popular lexicon. I research various examples of propaganda and their manifestations, both historical and contemporary (for example, World War I and World War II, Russian and Chinese troll farms, and the 2021 US Capitol riot), including the implications of political propaganda for the societies we live in.

Global Digital Law and Politics

Studied issues relating to the relationships between digital technologies, politics, law and social order. Topics covered are cyberlaw, digital infrastructures, surveillance, platforms and informational capitalism, datafication, privacy, data protection, the role of platforms in the governance of online speech, intermediary liability, blockchain, financial technologies, and the relationship between technology and inequality.

The Library of Possibilities:

Symbolizing Equal Access to Knowledge

2024

In a well-equipped and resourceful library, knowledge unfolds in abundance, offering students an opportunity to explore, learn, and grow. Yet, not every aspiring learner has the privilege of accessing such rich educational environments or resources. Educational inequality presents itself as a daunting challenge, leaving countless students yearning for the same opportunities.

According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) data, 258 million children and youth are out of school. Several factors keep kids out of school against their own will, like poverty, gender discrimination, child labor, lack of resources, and disability. This photograph of a thriving library symbolizes the urgent need to address disparities and ensure equal access to quality education so that every student can have a chance to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.

"Remember, we get equality in education, "-Elin Nordegren.

An Immigrant Achivement

2023

The picture that my friend took was more than just a picture; it was a reflection of interwoven fates and shared aspirations, a concrete moment in time that represented hope, ambition, and success. I was taking pictures of a beautiful Indian couple who had just graduated from Harvard. Their faces glowed with pride as they wore traditional graduation garb, caps perched atop their heads, and the shiny fabric of their robes whispered tales of tenacity and effort. The Indian immigrants who made their way through the demanding academic fields of political science and law represented a blend of cultural tradition and intellectual aspiration. They told me in whispers that they wanted me to be the one to capture this important event in a frame.
